A Running Jump
In Leigh’s comedic short film, we follow Gary (played by Lee Ingleby) as he embarks on what should be a simple mission to purchase a used car. However, this seemingly straightforward task turns into a complex adventure due to the involvement of various characters, including a shady car dealer from the East End named Perry (Eddie Marsan), Perry’s taxi-driving father (Sam Kelly), a garage owner named Derek (Robert Putt), and Perry’s wife, Debbie (Samantha Spiro). Adding to the chaos are a pair of twins (Danielle and Nichole Bird) who further complicate matters. The film’s humor is interwoven with sports references and scenes of ordinary people engaging in grassroots sports activities. The presence of swimmers, joggers, cyclists, and five-a-side football players highlights the significance of sports, whether casual or competitive, to the general public and particularly to the East End of London during this Olympic year.
