At the age of six, Cathy is placed by a social worker into a foster home located in the countryside. There, she gradually adapts to the strict regulations set by her foster mother, Réjeanne. Luckily, her foster father, Reynald, is compassionate and gentle, and he patiently assists her in opening up. Meanwhile, twelve-year-old Kayla is sent to a group home, where she befriends Morgane, a defiant teenager with plans to escape. Around the same time, Manu is released from the system upon turning eighteen, but she struggles to adjust to life on her own. All four characters eventually reunite at a ceremony celebrating a foster family they all once lived with.
